E-Scrap News Article Focus' on ADVANCE+ Program

E-Scrap News. A Resource Recycling, Inc. publication

In today’s labor market, companies may only dream about having less than 10% employee turnover and little to no absenteeism in their more-repetitive jobs. But data demonstrates those are some of the advantages of employing adults with disabilities.

A session at the E-Scrap and E-Reuse 2021 Conference explored the benefits of hiring people with disabilities, an often-overlooked population, with speakers focusing on e-Stewards’ ADVANCE+ program.

Blue Star Recyclers and Sipi Asset Recovery create strategic partnership in Chicagoland

I was tutored never to squander a crisis, and this posting is to share about one where we flipped some very negative conditions into a solution with multiple wins. After launching our Illinois Recycling Operations in the teeth of the pandemic, and unable to replicate our mission and Colorado model there, we were faced with the unthinkable option of closing operations there.

Enter Sipi Asset Recovery, a large competitor in the market who would normally be glad to see us go. However, in 2020 we shared our workforce development model with them as part of a program called Advance+, to help them employ people with disabilities. They became interested in helping us stay in Chicagoland, and began sending materials for our team to process. Today they donated and installed new pallet racking in our Buffalo Grove facility to help us accommodate more materials, which will enable us to train more people and create more jobs at Blue Star and Sipi. Collaboration to serve the greater good... what a concept.

Small Business, Big Impact

Blue Star Recyclers, a 501c3 social enterprise, now employs 46 people with autism and other disabilities and recycles around 10,500 tons of electronic waste each year at five sites in Colorado and Illinois. So far, it has trained almost 20 other U.S. recyclers to employ people with disabilities and expanded into Chile and the U.K. Morris and his son, Sam, the company president, this week earned one of four grand prizes from the Small Business Impact Awards, presented by Mastercard and Bank of America. These awards recognize small businesses that have made a big impact in their communities across four categories: innovation, diversity and inclusion, sustainability and giving back. Blue Star won in the sustainability category.
